Terms of Service

Last updated: 2026-05-24 · Effective date: 2026-05-24

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of altwriter, an AI-assisted writing workspace ("Service") operated by an individual sole trader registered in the United Kingdom (the "Operator", "we", "us"). By creating an account, purchasing credits, or otherwise using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms.

1. The Service

altwriter is a web application that lets you save project context (characters, settings, story so far, writing samples) and use AI language models to generate, continue, rewrite, or refine Chinese long-form creative writing.

2. Eligibility

  • You must be at least 18 years old to use the Service. By using the Service you represent that you meet this age requirement.
  • The Service is intended for adults. Content moderation enforces a safe-for-work policy (see §4).

3. Accounts

  • Account creation and authentication are handled by our authentication provider, Clerk. You are responsible for keeping your credentials secure.
  • One account per person. You may not share or sell access to your account.
  • We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms or abuse the Service (scripted use, mass account creation, evasion of rate limits, attempted reverse engineering, etc.).

4. Acceptable Use & Content Policy

altwriter generates only safe-for-work content. The following are prohibited and will be blocked by automated moderation and/or result in account termination:

  • Sexually explicit content, graphic sex, or pornography (romantic tension, kissing, and tasteful intimacy are permitted).
  • Content sexualising or harming minors. Zero tolerance.
  • Content promoting violence, terrorism, self-harm, or hate speech.
  • Content designed to harass, defame, or impersonate a specific real person.
  • Content infringing third-party intellectual property when you do not have the right to use it (see §5).
  • Any unlawful use under the laws of England and Wales or your jurisdiction of residence.

Repeated attempts to evade moderation may result in account suspension without refund.

5. Your Content

  • You retain ownership of any text you input ("Prompts") and the text generated by the Service in response to your Prompts ("Outputs").
  • You are solely responsible for your Prompts and Outputs, including (but not limited to) any copyright, trademark, privacy, or defamation issues. The Operator does not warrant that Outputs are non-infringing, accurate, or fit for any particular purpose.
  • You grant the Operator a limited, non-exclusive license to process your Prompts and Outputs as required to deliver the Service (including transmitting them to LLM providers — see §7).
  • We do not use your Prompts or Outputs to train any model. Third-party LLM providers operate under their own data-use policies; please review them if this is important to you.

6. Credits, Pricing, and Payment

  • The Service uses a one-time credit pack model. Credits do not auto-renew. There are no subscriptions.
  • Each generation consumes credits according to the pricing in effect at time of purchase. Refinements of the latest paid generation within a 10-minute window are free.
  • Free users are subject to model and context limits as published on the pricing page.
  • All prices are in GBP. Payment is processed by Stripe; we do not store payment card details.
  • We may adjust prices and credit amounts for future purchases. Credits you have already purchased are honoured under the terms that applied at time of purchase.

7. Third-Party Services

The Service depends on the following third-party processors. By using the Service you acknowledge that your data passes through them under their respective policies:

  • Clerk — authentication, account management.
  • Supabase — database hosting (EU region).
  • Stripe — payment processing.
  • Vercel — web hosting and edge network.
  • OpenRouter — routes LLM requests to underlying providers (DeepSeek, Anthropic, others).
  • Cloudflare — DNS and email forwarding.

Service outages or changes by these providers may affect the Service. We will use reasonable efforts to mitigate but cannot guarantee uninterrupted availability.

8. Refunds

See our Refund Policy.

9. Disclaimers

  • The Service is provided "as is" and "as available". To the maximum extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties (express, implied, statutory) including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
  • AI-generated text is non-deterministic. We do not warrant that any Output will meet your expectations, be free of errors, or be original.
  • We do not provide legal, medical, financial, or other professional advice. Do not rely on Outputs as a substitute for professional advice.

10. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the Operator's total aggregate liability arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Service shall not exceed the greater of (a) the amount you paid to us in the 12 months preceding the event giving rise to the claim, or (b) £50.

In no event shall the Operator be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including lost profits or loss of data.

Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law (including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud).

11. Termination

You may stop using the Service at any time and delete your account from /app/account. Account deletion immediately removes your projects, generations, and user record from our database; billing records may be retained for up to 7 years where required by UK tax law.

We may suspend or terminate accounts that breach these Terms. Where termination is for cause (fraud, abuse, repeated policy violations), unused credits are forfeited.

12. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be notified by email or via a prominent notice on the Service. Continued use after the effective date of changes constitutes acceptance.

13. Governing Law and Disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes arising shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales, unless mandatory consumer protection law in your jurisdiction provides otherwise.
